How to Prepare for an Insurance Coverage Review

A simple checklist can make your next insurance review clearer, faster, and more useful.

An insurance coverage review works best when it starts with a clear picture of your life today—not only the policies you bought years ago. A little preparation helps your agent focus on the decisions that matter and explain your options in plain language.

Start with what has changed

Insurance needs often change after a move, a renovation, a new vehicle, a marriage, a new driver in the household, a job change, retirement, or the start of a small business. Make a short list of changes since your last review, even if you are unsure whether they affect coverage.

Gather the useful documents

  • Current declaration pages or benefit summaries for the policies you want reviewed.

  • A current list of drivers, vehicles, properties, household members, and business activities that may need coverage.

  • Recent renewal notices and any questions you marked while reading them.

  • Information about loans, leases, mortgages, or contracts that may require certain limits.

  • A list of medications and preferred doctors when reviewing health or Medicare choices.

Decide what you want the review to answer

Good questions are more useful than asking only whether a policy is “cheap.” Ask what the policy protects, where the major exclusions or deductibles are, whether limits still fit your situation, and what would happen after a realistic claim.

It is also reasonable to ask which choices are essential, which are optional, and which risks you would be accepting if you choose a lower limit or remove a coverage.

Bring priorities, not perfect answers

You do not need to become an insurance expert before the conversation. Tell your agent what you are most concerned about—monthly cost, protecting savings, keeping preferred doctors, satisfying a lender, or reducing an uncovered risk. That context helps the agent explain tradeoffs instead of simply presenting a list of products.

End with a written next step

Before the review ends, confirm what is changing, what is staying the same, when any change would take effect, and what documents still need to be provided. Never cancel existing coverage until replacement coverage is confirmed and effective.
